WHO WE ARE

health fairA Cup Of Cold Water (ACCW) is a non profit charitable organization. The founder is, Yvette Scott. ACCW was founded in 2008. We receive funding for activities from private and public donations.

ACCW’s motto is: We teach you what many doctors are too busy to explain”. For example, one lady called to get an explanation of neuropathy (new-rop-athie). This is a condition that the nerves are not working right and mostly seen in the lower parts of the body, e.g., feet. Her concern was the doctor said she needed to protect her feet from injury. She was anxious and afraid to walk. However the MD explained it to her, she translated the information into not walking around too much because if she did, she would fall. We explained to her that the nerves in the feet cannot feel pain with neuropathy, wearing shoes that give more protection in case her feet accidentally bumped into something and she may not feel it. She appreciated the opportunity to express herself with someone she trusted and felt relieved when the call ended. Helping people in the community understand complicated medical conditions is one of ACCW’s goals.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Ms. Yvette Scott a native of Jacksonville, Florida and lives in California; she has two daughters, Sylvia and Demi and four grandchildren; she is a registered nurse, a vocational nurse instructor and is currently completing a Master’s in nursing program. Yvette has traveled to Ethiopia with a medical missionary team to serve HIV/AIDS individuals, served in the Katrina crisis, volunteered with local organizations, e.g., Visiting Nurses Association, the National Council on Drug and Alcohol, the Menlo Park Presbyterian Worldwide Missionary Team, City Team Ministries and other organizations, and she is an active member at her church.
Ms. Scott is observably passionate about serving the needs of others and enjoys caring for the less fortunate. She says of living, “When I die I want someone to sing, ‘If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain.’”
While working at local hospitals Yvette observed the disparity in treatment; Particularly among diverse low income populations, as well as the differential treatment given to patients who financially support the hospital institution. She believes the inspiration (to form ACCW) came in a voice she heard while lamenting over the treatment in care she observed, “if you don’t like the way things are done, start your own and do something about it”.
